A Job ((Continued))

[mosswhisker]

Mosswhisker nodded and smiled hopefully at Venomwind. She bounded back into the wall of bracken and turned around as she came upon the cobweb covered bush. "This is where I got my cobwebs," she mewed to the dark grey she cat. Without waiting a moment longer, she began to wrap her small paw in the thick webbing. "Why do you think RiverClan attacked like that, Venomwind?" Mosswhisker asked after the thought entered her head,"I mean, yeah I know its just in RiverClan's nature to be a bunch of crowfood eaters, but why did they invade so suddenly?"

Venomwind paused and blinked at Mosswhisker, puzzled by her question. 'Why DID RiverClan attack?' She wondered to herself. For a few seconds, she just continued to blink at Mosswhisker. She finally shrugged. "Shiningheart was the one that thought they were crossing the border." She meowed, going back to wrapping her paw up in cobwebs for her sister. "Maybe she knows something she just didn't tell us."

Mosswhisker nodded. It wasn't the answer she was hoping for, but it was an answer,"Yeah, she probably does." The gray she cat paused for a heartbeat to tug at a strand of cobweb that had managed to stick itself on Mosswhisker's shoulder. "Cobwebs," she laughed slightly to Venomwind,"They're so sticky, it's too bad Mosspelt wasn't at camp, he knows more about this stuff."

Venomwind nodded, grave. "He's also much more effective at judging wounds." She meowed, thinking of how much blood Shiningheart must have lost by now.

Mosswhisker looked back up at Venomwind,"I think we've got enough cobwebs," she mewed looking closely at the sticky, white gauze that seemed to have covered her whole paw. "I'm sure Blizzardshard could use some help about now," Mosswhisker concluded solemnly.

Venomwind sighed sadly, sitting on her haunches. "No, not yet." She murmured, looking at the ground. "Like I said, this happened before. If his reaction is anything like the last time, he'll need some time alone to convince himself Shiningheart's injuries weren't his fault." She looked back to where they had come from, her eyes filled with sorrow. "We almost lost both of them because Blizzardshard wouldn't eat until he was sure she was going to get better."

A shudder ripped down her spine as an image of her friend, then Blizzardpaw, came into her mind's eye. There was a time when he was so skinny, one would have thought it was leaf-bare, or that the twolegs had nearly killed all the fresh-kill. It was only when Shiningheart, then Shiningpaw, actually sat up and swatted his ear did he start to go back to normal.

Mosswhisker sat down and bowed her head. "I wish there was something we could do," she muttered, partly to herself. She looked back up and mewed more clearly,"I've never had any 'real' siblings like you have Shiningheart, but I know what Blizzardshard must feeling, you know about feeling like he failed a friend of his." She broke off awkardly. "Um, how long do you think we should give him? Shiningheart looked pretty bad..."Mosswhisker ended, looking back towards where Blizzardshard was.

Venomwind unconsciously tweaked her ear, wondering just how long they should give him. Last time she had left him alone until the evening patrol found him on his own. But then her wound wasn't as serious...Her sister could be joining as she spoke. "We've spent enough time." She meowed, trying to make her voice firm. "Let's go." She began padding forward awkwardly because of the cobwebs wrapped around her paw.

Mosswhisker ducked her head and hobbled unsteadily on her three paws that didn't have cobwebs. She was anxious to see how Shiningheart and Blizzardshard were since she and Venomwind left them alone. She let out a gasp of relief when she saw Blizzardshard's snowy pelt with Shiningheart. "How is she? We got the cobwebs," Mosswhisker reported softly as not to startle the larger warrior.

Venomwind gasped when Blizzardshard looked up. His amber eyes were dull with sorrow. He nodded sullenly and gingerly took Shiningheart's scruff between his teeth. While Venomwind and Mosswhisker had been away, Blizzardshard had lost the battle against the anguish in his heart. Even now, as the large tom easily lifted the petite deputy, he was shaking in fear.

Mosswhisker looked at the ground to avoid the sad gaze of the defeated warrior. She swallowed and looked quickly at Shiningheart, Mosswhisker could hardly tell if she was breathing or not. She lifted one small paw and gently fixed the cobwebs on her battered pelt. The fur along her spine tingled uneasily. The whole forest was quite, not even the icy wind that foretold the early leaf- bare stirred the leaves. It was as if the trees and sky were anxiously watching the poor ThunderClan warrior. "Um, V-Venomwind and I can carry her if you'd like, Blizzardshard," the Mosswhisker offered, politely resting her tail tip on the older warrior's broad shoulder.

Blizzardshard nodded silently, a dejected symbol of his inner defeat. If, somehow, he did lose Shiningheart...Blizzardshard's heart stuttered just thinking about it. He'd probably leave ThunderClan because it would hurt too much to be reminded everyday of what he and Shiningheart almost had.

Venomwind avoided his gaze as well as she slid herself underneath her sister's body, positioning the deputy into what Venomwind hoped fervently was a comfortable position.

Mosswhisker grasped the loose fur around Shiningheart's shoulder and rose her gently so she was even with Venomwind. She stifled and sneeze as the deputy's pure white fur tickled her nose. She'll be fine, she thought, her light green eyes flicked around towards Blizzardshard. If it were only as easy for him to be assured Mosswhisker thought sympathetically.

A small whimper escaped into the air, making both Venomwind and Blizzardshard freeze. Their scared, fretful eyes turned to eachother before looking at Shiningheart. The deputy's eyes were open, and filled with what felt to her like unbearable pain. "Blizzardshard," her voice was a meek growl, "remind me to hurt you when I get better." She smiled weakly at the tom before falling unconscious again.

Blizzardshard's amber eyes never left her. Finally he blinked and gave the two awake she-cats a relieved grin. "She'll get better." He promised them all, taking the lead toward camp.

Mosswhisker couldn't help but let out a small squeak of excitement,"She's alright... Well, not exactly, but she'll live!". She gave a little bounce before regaining composure and carrying Shiningheart away from the battle place, towards camp. Mosswhisker sent one last glance over her shoulder and shuddered. The sight of battling cats and blood being spilt was still fresh in her mind. "We totally whipped those RiverClan cats' tails, didn't we?" Mosswhisker mewed lightheartedly.
