First steps

Shiningheart lay in one of the nests in the medicine den. Her bandaged side itched something fierce. But she dared not itch it, lest it reopen her stinging wounds. Her ears perked up when Blizzardshard came into the den, carrying a mouse and two voles. "Wow." She meowed, her eyes wide. "That's the most fresh-kill I've seen in a while!"

Blizzardshard put down the rodents and smiled at Shiningheart. "I know." He nudged one of the voles toward her. "This one is for you." Then he separate the remaining vole and the mouse. "The other vole is for Mosspelt. I chose the mouse for myself." He glanced over the body and watched Shiningheart's expression nervously. "I wasn't sure if I was allowed to eat with you or not, seeing as how you're still recovering..."

Shiningheart purred at him and pulled the vole closer to her. Then she frowned down at it. It actually had some meat on it. "What did the queens and elders get?" She asked thoughtfully.

Blizzardshard purred at her concern. "The queens each got a pigeon, and the elders got the biggest rabbit in the fresh-kill pile." Her shocked look drew a bark of laughter from him.

"It's a pile?" She asked, voice dripping surprise. "Normally, it's just scattered remains of what the patrols could find! Who caught it all?" She didn't miss the flash of pride that swept across his face.

"Your apprentice. Venomwind and I have been taking turns training her." He answered in confident tone. "I've been watching her progress, along with her sibling. Nectorpaw is becoming an awesome hunter, and Moonpaw is an impressive fighter." He shook his head and bent forward to take a bite of his mouse. "Mosswhisker doesn't seem to have a lot of confidence as a mentor, but that will come in time."

"Not alot of confidence?!" a hearty laugh burst from the entrance of the medicine den. If one were to turn their head, they would have seen the gray she cat, Mosswhisker."Hardly!" she continued,"I fancied myself kind of good for a first time mentor." she purred as she waltzed over to the injured deputy.

"Anyway, I came cause I saw Blizzardshard, from across the clearing, go into here, so I guessed it was alright to come in and see how you were doing," Mosswhisker adjusted herself so that she was next to Shiningheart, but no so close that she was in the way. "How are you feeling. I mean, last time I saw you, you could hardly walk."she continued to rant on, talking too fast for anyone else to get a word in. Though, eventually, the she cat slowed down and watched the other two cats expectantly, as if she thought either of them understood a word that she just spoke.

As a matter of fact, neither cat had understood a single word Mosswhisker had said. They just stared at her, identical looks of dull confusion on their faces. They exchanged glances before pulling their heads together. "Do you understand a single word she just said?" Shiningheart mewed to Blizzardshard, just loud enough for Mosswhisker to hear.

Blizzardshard subtly shook his head, a grin tugging at his mouth. "Nope, not a one." He whispered at the same volume. Then he said louder. "But she's right, you know. When we dragged you back here, you couldn't move at all. I'm guessing your feeling good enough if you worry about the elders and the queens, though." He purred. Then he looked at Mosswhisker. "Go get some fresh-kill for yourself, then rejoin us. We'll wait for you!" He suggested. Shiningheart nodded in agreement.

Mosswhisker heard the pair talking about her. But she didn't say anything, how could any cat be upset when New Leaf is just around the corner and the deputy is starting to recover from her dreadful wounds due to a RiverClan ambush. Instead, the gray she cat just tilted her head back in amusement and let out a gentle purring laugh.

"Go get some fresh-kill for yourself, then rejoin us. We'll wait for you!"
Mosswhisker nodded and mewed gratefully,"Great, I'll be back in a heartbeat." The she cat spun around and wove her way out of the den and into the main clearing. The smell of greenery instantly filled her scent glands. She turned her green gaze up to the top of the clearing to see buds already dotting the branches of the trees.

Mosswhisker turned her attention back to getting prey from the fresh kill pile that seemed to be growing bigger every day. She grabbed a thrush from the pile and returned to the den. "Back," she mewed, dropping her thrush as she spoke,"Betcha missed me?"

Shiningheart looked up from devouring her vole, her cheeks puffing out to the sides with how much food was stuffed in her mouth. "Heya Moffwhifker!" She mewed before swallowing. "Sit down. I want a full report on how both of the apprentices are doing!"

Blizzardshard nodded, swallong his own mouthful. "Why don't you see for yourself? We're having a joint battle training session at sun-high." He looked at Mosswhisker to confirm this.

Mosswhisker tried to hide the surprise that gleamed in her pale green eyes. She had just heard.... or she might have been told earlier and forgot, as usual. Though, trying to soothe her embarassment, she just nodded and mewed,"Of course. Um, I'm pretty sure I told Moonpaw. No, I'm absolutely sure!" the gray she cat grinned sheepishly.

She wasn't usually, this air headed. It's probably the weather, yeah, it's getting warm, so maybe... Mosswhisker stopped her train of thought, there was no valiable excuse, so she just continued to sit there, hoping that niether of the older warriors would think any less of her.

For the first time in however long Blizzardshard has known her, Shiningheart looked uneasy. And was that a flicker of fear in her eyes? "I-I don't know, guys." She mewed, shifting in her nest. Blizzardshard didn't understand her fear until he saw her wince a bit. "My wounds still sting a bit. And what if they tear open again?? Shouldn't we wait for Mosspelt to give the all-clear before I start to move around?"

Blizzardshard's expression softened with something that made Shiningheart's heart beat faster. He reached his head forward to rest his nose reassuringly on her neck. "Don't worry." He murmured softly to her. "You can lean against me, and I won't let anything happen to you." He sensed Shiningheart's hesitation and pulled back, looking into her eyes. "Do you trust me?"

Shiningheart met his gaze, her resolve crumbling into a pile of rubble. Finally she closed her eyes and sighed before opening them again, her eyes set in determination. "With my life." She said in finality.

Mosswhisker watched the two cats converse. They seem way closer than any other warrior I've seen, even closer than siblings, the thought was like De ja vu, she had heard someone else say something alot like that before. A purr rumbled quietly in her throat, but she said nothing and continued to tear at the thrush. Finally, as she took the last few bites out of her bird, the two warriors seemed to have come to a decision. "So," the gray she cat mewed, "What's the plan?" Mosswhisker sat up, tail twitching, and her green gaze flicking from Blizzardshard to Shiningheart expectantly.

Mosswhisker's voice seemed to jerk the two warriors back into reality from their own little world. They looked at the younger warrior. Shiningheart looked a bit sheepish at forgetting she was there while Blizzardshard looked thoughtful before rising to his full height. "Go find Venomwind and the apprentices." He ordered Mosswhisker. "I'll help Shiningheart to the usual training spot and we'll go from there." He looked at Shiningheart from the corner of his eye. "Do you think you can make it that far?" He asked his best friend.

Shiningheart nodded, the determination clear in that one gesture. She heaved herself to her paws, her legs seeming a bit shaky at first. She took a few paw-steps out of her nest before her gait steadied. The deputy came to a stop beside Blizzardshard, flicking with her ears for him to show the way.

Though she nodded at Blizzardshard's order, Mosswhisker waited until she saw Shiningheart stand before she slipped out of the den and towards the apprentice's den. Her paws skidding every now and then due to the slush of the melting snow. The gray she cat stuck her head quickly into the den, her sides pricked by the holly that trimmed it. "Hello? Moonpaw, Nectarpaw, it's time for training!" her green eyes picked out the silver pelt of her own apprentice, "Well, take your time, meet us at the usual training spot," she answered to the silence.

After that, Mosswhisker skipped across the clearing to the fresh kill pile and waited until the familiar gray pelt of Venomwind entered her sights. "Hey, Venomwind!" she called, waving her tail to the older warrior,"Shiningheart and Blizzardshard want us at the training hollow!"
